Dr. Pen M9 is a 2026 microneedling pen in which the depth is set electronically rather than by a dial — one press per 0.2 mm step — and each cartridge is chip-matched to the pen. Four wide heads, six speeds, cordless over Type-C.

Why the depth is on the motor, not on a dial

Depth on a manual pen lives on a dial, and the dial is the part that drifts: you set 0.5 mm and find the collar has crept a fraction by the time you reach the second cheek. On the M9 each press moves the needle a fixed 0.2 mm and the setting stays where you put it, so the under-eye and the jawline can be worked at different depths in one session without re-zeroing anything.

The chip in the cartridge

Every genuine Dr. Pen M9 head carries a chip that the pen reads as the head is seated, and the pen stays in its waiting state until it recognises one. In plain terms this is a chip-matched system: genuine Dr. Pen M9 cartridges work, and heads made for other models are not recognised. The head family is 18, 36 and 42-pin plus Round Nano — wide heads only, with no 12-pin in the range. Heads for this pen are in the M9 replacement cartridge listing.

What is in the box

  • 1 × Smart Induction Base (Auto-Hold)
  • 2 × cartridges

Cartridge heads are consumable and single-use, so the head you reorder is worth deciding early — the M9 replacement cartridges. Every M9 we ship is a genuine Dr. Pen device; the verification guide shows how to check one.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How deep can the Dr. Pen M9 go, and where should a home user start?

The range is 0 to 2.5 mm in 0.2 mm steps. Start at 0.25–0.5 mm on the face and keep facial passes at or below 1.0 mm as you build up; above 1.5 mm belongs with trained practitioners. The right number for each zone is in our needle depth guide.

Which depth should I use on each zone?

A face is not one depth. The under-eye and the upper lip want the shallow end, the cheeks and jawline take more, and the forehead sits between the two. Step up or down as you move between zones instead of working the whole face at a single setting — that is what the one-press adjustment is for.

Is the Dr. Pen M9 painful to use at home?

It is felt more than the smaller Dr. Pen models, and the reason is structural rather than a fault: M9 heads start at 18 pins, so one pass contacts more skin than a finer head does, and more contact reads as more sensation. Owners coming from an M8S notice it most. Working shallower, keeping a hyaluronic acid serum on the skin, and choosing a higher speed change the experience more than anything else.

How do I choose the right speed level?

Speed changes the pace of the needle, not the depth, so there is no single correct setting. Lower levels give more control around the nose, mouth and under-eye; higher levels tend to glide more comfortably over larger areas such as the cheek and forehead. Staying on one mid-level setting for a whole face is perfectly workable.

Do third-party cartridges work in the Dr. Pen M9?

No. The pen reads a chip in each genuine Dr. Pen M9 head and stays in its waiting state until it recognises one, so heads made for other pens are not an option here. This is a chip-matched system rather than a universal mount, and the same chip is how the pen aligns its power delivery to the head that is fitted.

Which M9 cartridge should I start with?

The 18-pin. It is the smallest head made for this pen and the one most face routines are built on. Add the 36-pin if you also work the neck, jawline or body, and a Round Nano for no-needle serum work and under-eye upkeep. How the grid sizes differ is set out in our cartridges explained guide.

How often can I use the Dr. Pen M9?

Once every three to four weeks. The visible result comes from the skin rebuilding after each session, and that takes weeks — sessions run closer together interrupt the process rather than adding to it. Let redness clear completely before the next one. The full walk-through is in how to use a Dr. Pen at home.

What should I put on my skin after a session?

A hydrating serum, straight on while the channels are open. Keep the routine gentle for the next few days and leave acids and retinoids out of it until the skin has settled. Which serum to pair with a session is covered in our microneedling serum guide.

Does the M9 run cordless, and what is the induction base for?

It runs cordless on a rechargeable battery and charges over Type-C, so the same cable as most phones and laptops. The Smart Induction Base is the stand the pen rests in between passes: it holds the handpiece upright and off the surface while you reapply serum.
